"Abide" Original Oil Painting

$800.00

18”x24” (1.25” depth)

Oil on gallery wrapped cotton canvas

There’s a special story behind this painting. I got to paint a portion of this piece live during worship at a weekend retreat.

My church graciously asked me to paint a visual representation of their scripture focus for the weekend. John 15:4 says “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” These are some of Jesus’s words to His followers as He is preparing them for His death. Just before this chapter, Jesus tells them about the Holy Spirit who will soon be with them always and He says “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

Naturally, I chose to paint the vine, who is Jesus, and the branches (His followers) can be seen peaking out through the leaves. The purple grapes draping from the branches represent the fruit of our righteousness that comes from abiding in Jesus alone. His Spirit in us produces our good works, produces our very life and salvation. We can’t save ourselves.

I love this passage that ends with Jesus saying “as the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.” And then immediately says this is all for our joy, that our joy may be made full.

This painting represents fullness of joy and peace to me. I get to take a deep breath and choose to abide, rest in Him. My good works, my very life and salvation, come from Him. I don’t have to muster it up myself (I try and it never works). And He doesn’t just hold my life in His hands, He loves me and wants me to lean on Him.
That is very good news, my friends. Lean and abide.

This artwork is painted around the sides in white and hanging wire has been installed on the back. Comes unframed.
